Faculty Awards

Dr. George Carman is the recipient of  the “Faculty Mentor of the Year” from the Compact for Faculty Diversity, October 2008.

Dr. Henryk Daun is honored by the General Board of Scientific and Technical Association of Engineers and Technicians of Food Industry SIT SPOZ, a member of the Polish Federation of Engineering Associations NOT, at their Warsaw Poland conference, in appreciation of the many years of cooperation with Polish scientists, engineers and producers, 2008. 

Dr. Mukund Karwe is the recipient of the William Cruess Award for Excellence in Teaching awarded by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), June.  This is the highest national teaching award of IFT. 

Dr. Mukund Karwe was recognized for his food science/culinology work at Bergen County Technical Schools during a Paramus Board of Education meeting, February.

Dr. Karl R. Matthews is the recipient of the Department’s 2008-2009 Professor Endel Karmas Award for Excellence in Teaching Food Science.  The recipient of this award is voted upon by graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in the Department’s fall 2008 and spring 2009 courses. 

Dr. Thomas Montville, of the Department of Food Science, is the recipient of the Bernard L. Oser Food Ingredients Safety Award from the Institute of Food Technologists at their Annual Meeting in New Orleans, June 28, 2008.  The award recognized Montville's contributions to the understanding the mechanisms by which antimicrobial peptides act to inhibit foodborne pathogen so that they could be used effectively in real world food systems.

Dr. Donald Schaffner is the recipient of the Elmer Marth Educator Award awarded by the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP), 2009.  It is presented for outstanding service to the public, IAFP, and the arena of education in food safety and food protection. 


Student Awards and Scholarships

The Department of Food Science Graduate Student Association won the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association’s Chapter of the Year Award at the annual meeting held in New Orleans, Louisiana June 28-July 1, 2008 and the annual meeting held in Anaheim California, June 6-9, 2009.  The GSA has been honored with this annual award 7 times within the past 9 years.

Mohamed Badaoui Najjar is the recipient of the 2008 Z. John Ordal Award for First Place in the Food Microbiology Oral Graduate Paper competition.  This competition was held at the annual Institute of Food Technologists meeting held in New Orleans, Louisiana June 28-July 1, 2008. 

Mohamed Badaoui Najjar is the recipient of the 2008 Institute of Food Technologists Graduate Scholarship and the 2008 Institute of Food Technologists Graduate Food Microbiology Scholarship, July.

Silvia Dominguez, graduate student, is the recipient of the Wilbur Runk Scholarship from the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Rutgers, September. 

Peng Yuan is the recipient of The Daun  Family Endowed Graduate Student Prize, September 2008.   

Anibal Soto-Dardalba is the recipient of the Carman Prize, December 2008.

Andrew Draganski and Ke Shi, Department of Food Science graduate students, are the recipients of the Institute of Food Technologists Graduate Scholarship $2,000/each.

Youn-Kyung Kim, Department of Food Science graduate student, is the recipient of the 2009 NJAES student research poster competition. 

Seung-Wook Seo, Department of Food Science graduate student, is the recipient of the 2008-2009 Professor Endel Karmas Award for Excellence as a Teaching Assistant in Food Science.  The recipient of this award is voted upon by undergraduate students enrolled in the Department’s fall 2008 and spring 2009 courses.

Niti Lathia, Department of Food Science undergraduate student, is the recipient of the Department’s 2008-2009 Most Improved Student Award in the amount of $500

Jennifer Merle, Department of Food Science undergraduate student, is the recipient of the Department’s 2008-2009 Triumph Award in the amount of $500.

David Sorkin, Department of Food Science undergraduate student, is the recipient of the 2008-2009 C. Olin Ball Scholarship in the amount of $750.

Tiffany Wang and Blasé Ferraris, Department of Food Science undergraduate students, are the recipients of the 2008-2009 Dick H. Kleyn Memorial Award in the amount of $750/each.

Joseph Donovan, Department of Food Science undergraduate student, is the recipient of the 2008-2009 Lloyd K. Riggs Scholarship in the amount of $500.

Jennifer Merle, Department of Food Science undergraduate student, is the recipient of the 2008-2009 Elizabeth F. Stier Scholarship in the amount of $500.

Nicole Peterson and Kristen Genna, Department of Food Science undergraduate students,are the recipients of the National Association of Flavors and Food Ingredient Systems (NAFFS) Scholarships

The Albert Kleinman Fund in Food Science was established by The Kleinman Foundation, Inc. to provide financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students  majoring in Food Science with outstanding academic achievement.

The National Association of Flavors and Food Ingredient Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students Nicole Peterson and Kristen Genna and the graduate students Seng-wook Seo and Anand Atre.

Wenping Tang, Department of Food Science graduate student, received the Teranishi Graduate Fellowship in Food Chemistry Award sponsored by American Chemical Society’s Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Jonathan Baldasare, Department of Food Science undergraduate student, is the recipient of the 2009-2010 Myron and Rona Solberg Renaissance Scholarship in the amount of $2,000.

Joseph Petho, Danielle Voss (Food Science undergraduate students) and Andrew Draganski, Ke Shi,  Nidhi Singla (Food Science graduate students) are the recipients of the 2009-2010 Eastern Frosted Foods Association Scholarships in the amount of $1,000/each.  These scholarships are available to entering SEBS juniors, seniors and graduate students majoring in Food Science, Nutritional Science or Environmental and Business Economics and enrolled in the upcoming academic year.  The scholarships are based on food industry interest or experience, achievement, character and financial need.
