The Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Education office of the NJ Department of Agriculture is advancing seven career pathways: agribusiness systems; animal systems; environmental service systems; food products & processing systems; natural resources systems; plant systems; and power, structural & technical systems. The Food Products & Processing Systems Pathway focuses on preparing people to discover new food sources, analyze food content and apply food science principles to develop new ways to process, preserve, package or store food according to industry and government regulations. It also addresses the creation of new food products to meet customer needs and inspect food-processing areas to ensure that sanitation, safety, quality and waste management standards are met. The Teacher of Agriculture teaching certification in New Jersey is a blanket certification that qualifies a person to teach any and all of the pathways. While production agriculture is part of what this office does, it is also focused on preparing students for a multitude of careers in and related to agriculture. All 47 of the food, agriculture & natural resources programs in NJ secondary schools are focused on meeting the needs of local industry. None of them are solely focused on production agriculture. And there are exciting teaching jobs available for certified teachers with specialization in food science.

Food Science Majors can choose to spend one additional year at Rutgers completing teacher certification (https://gse.rutgers.edu/academic-programs/five-year-teacher-education/agricultural-science-education), and, graduate with a M.Ed.

Many high school ag programs have adopted curricula developed by CASE (Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education). For more information on Food Science and Safety, visit: https://www.case4learning.org/
