COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Graduates in Food Science have diverse career opportunities in industry, academia, and government. This course provides an overview of the Food Science curriculum at Rutgers and introduces experiential learning pathways, including research opportunities, internships, and study abroad programs. Students will explore the interdisciplinary connections between Food Science and fields like chemistry, biology, math, physics, biochemistry, and microbiology.
The course includes interactions with industry professionals, alumni, and academic faculty to explore career paths and gain insights into the field. Students will also develop essential professional skills, including resume writing, interview techniques, and strategies for securing internships and full-time positions.
Course Objectives (with IFT Program Goal Mapping)
- Identify and describe at least three career pathways in Food Science, including the academic and experiential preparation required
- Analyze the interdisciplinary connections between Food Science and key scientific disciplines, using real-world examples.
- Create a professional resume and participate in a mock interview, demonstrating effective communication and preparedness for internships or employment

Cheating and Plagiarism
(From Spring 2010 Andy Egan 01:730:252 Eating Right): "Cheating on tests or plagiarizing materials in your papers deprives you of the educational benefits of preparing these materials appropriately. It is personally dishonest to cheat on a test or to hand in a paper based on unacknowledged words or ideas that someone else originated. It is also unfair, since it gives you an undeserved advantage over your fellow students who are graded on the basis of their own work. In this class we will take cheating very seriously".
Turnitin will be used to assess students‚ submissions and all suspected cases of cheating and plagiarism will be automatically referred to the Rutgers Academic Integrity office.
