Experiential Learning Registration
Steps to register and complete Your Experiential Learning* (EL) Course
*Previously known as Experience-based Education (EBE)
- Plan ahead
- Ideally during your junior or senior year, after completing Principles of Food Science, contact a Food Science faculty member if you're interested in a research based EL project.
- Alternatively, if you have secured an internship, confirm with your supervisor/employer that you plan to use the experience for academic credit.
- Credit-hour requirement:
- You must complete 120–130 hours of work for 3 credits of EL (required for SEBS graduation).
- These hours may be split over multiple semesters with fewer credits per semester, based on guidance from your EL faculty supervisor.
- Course options:
- 11:400:493 – Research-based Learning: Register for this if you'e working irectly with a faculty member.
- 11:400:494 – Internship-based Learning: Register for this if you're using an internship experience for EL credit.
- Complete Section 1 of the EL contract:
- Work with your faculty or employer supervisor to write your learning goals.
- If registering for 494, you may draft your goals with Dr. P.
- Request registration permission (SPN)
- Once your learning goals are drafted, email Dr. P to request an SPN (Special Permission Number).
- Register before the Add/Drop deadline of the semester.
- Upload Section 1
- Complete Section 1 of your contract in Canvas site for your EL course.
- Complete your research or internship work in the semester.
- At semester's end – complete Section 2 of the contract:
- Document the EL experience and upload it to Canvas.
- Complete Section 3 – Supervisor Evaluation:
- Your faculty or employer supervisor will assess your performance.
- Leadership skills evaluation is mandatory.
- Not all criteria may apply to all EL experiences; they may mark "N/A" where appropriate.
- Upload the completed evaluation to Canvas.
- Complete Section 4 – Final Grade and Signature:
- Fill out Fields 1–3, including your signature and the date.
- Then submit the form to your faculty supervisor/adviser or Dr. P for them to enter the final grade, add their signature, and date it.
- For 11:400:493 (Research-based):
- Your faculty supervisor /adviser or Dr. P (in consultation with faculty) assigns your final grade and signs.
- For 11:400:494 (Internship-based):
- Meet with your faculty adviser/Dr. P to receive your grade and their signature.
- Upload the completed Section 4 to Canvas.
- Waiting to see your grade:
- You can view the letter grade for the course in your Degree Navigator ortranscript after you submit all sections of EL contract in Canvas.
What if I do not finish the EL in one semester?
If you do not complete the EL within one semester, you will receive a temporary grade of "TZ." Once you submit all required sections of the EL contract form in Canvas, your final letter grade will be updated accordingly.
