Working at ISC Gums during the fall semester was a very unique opportunity for me. A lot of the experiments that were conducted in the lab were new to me, but their applications is what I learned about for the past couple of years. Performing experiments such as checking the pH and color were things I learned to do in my lab classes. But doing new experiments such as measuring ash content, measuring acid insoluble residues, and swabbing the production floor for microorganisms, was something I learned a lot from. On a daily basis, it was necessary to do all the analytical tests such as checking the viscosity, pH, color, optical rotation, and loss of drying. Doing these tasks everyday made me become trained in what values for each of these experiments were considered passing and acceptable for use. I learned how to trouble-shoot problems on my own, whether it be an issue with the equipment or invalid data. Being able to learn about good laboratory practices, advanced experimental techniques, and principles of HACCP and their applications, really helped me prepare for my future career. Learning a lot from the quality control aspect of the food industry was interesting to me because it exposed me to the many tests that were taken to ensure good quality of samples for consumer use.
